Framing School Violence and Bullying in Young Adult Manga

Abstract

This chapter focuses on the ways in which the data set’s manga titles had a tendency to normalize violence and bullying within K-12 school settings. The chapter provides an overview of manga titles set within schools whose teachers and administrators were shown to tolerate, encourage, and even expect their students to engage in patterns of violence and bullying. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the ways in which parents, teachers, and administrators might benefit from reflecting on how adult responses and faculty interventions in interpersonal classroom conflicts were framed throughout the data set.
