Abstract
At the first meeting on genome mapping and sequencing that took place at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, New York (USA) in 1988 the initiative was taken to establish the Human Genome Organization (HUGO). It was established as an international coordinating scientific body in the rapidly developing field of genomics as a kind of United Nations for the human genome. HUGO was founded later in 1988 in Montreux (Switzerland) and its head office is located in Seoul (South Korea) (http://www.hugo-international.org/). Its mission is to bring the benefits of genomic sciences to humanity by promoting fundamental genomic research within nations and throughout the world.
