Abstract

The inflammatory response is among the most complex physiologic processes integral to the human host. Biologic variability between hosts and disease states adds to this complexity.

Knowledge of the fundamental elements of the immune response to pathogenic challenge is essential to better understand inflammatory phenotypes.

The chapter provides insight into the critical processes that characterize the immune response, including the intricate and often nuanced balance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory states.
