Endothelial Interactions and Coagulation

Abstract

The endothelium comprises the inner cell lining of all blood vessels and is thus present in every organ in the body. With its continuous exposure to circulating blood components, it serves a vital role in sustaining nutrient perfusion to organs, local regulation of blood flow through vasodilation and vasoconstriction mediators, prevention of bleeding, aiding in localization of infection, preventing systemic spread, and delivery of mediators of tissue repair. In these roles, the endothelium interacts with a myriad of tissue based and circulating proteins and mediators involved in the fine regulation of microcirculatory flow, thrombosis, anti-thrombosis, clot lysis, immune signaling, pathogen elimination, and tissue repair.
