Abstract
The maintenance of adequate oxygen delivery to meet the demands of tissues is the essence of critical care medicine. Inadequate oxygen delivery, which can occur on a global level as in cardiogenic shock or on a regional level as in traumatic brain injury, must be recognized and treated in order to optimize outcome. A clear understanding of the determinants of oxygen delivery and oxygen consumption in the critically ill pediatric patient is essential for all pediatric critical care clinicians.
