Abstract

The aim of the electrophysiological evaluation in facial paralysis is the verification of a peripheral lesion, the determination of the extent of the lesion, and the prognosis of a possible regeneration. For this purpose, the most important methods are nerve conduction studies and the needle electromyography. For special questions, blinking reflex studies can be performed. Together with the clinical examination, the healing process, and taking into consideration an underlying disease, the electrophysiological examination provides a decision support for therapeutic interventions. Therefore it is important to know which information the electrophysiological evaluation can provide and what are its limitations.
