Abstract
Having reached the end of our review, we now take a step back to assess the implications of the work we have described, the issues that remain unresolved, and the likely directions of future research. Later in the chapter we consider technical details and practical problems relating to implementations of self-replicators, and conclude with a discussion of what we consider to be the most likely directions for future developments. But first we consider the narratives and future worlds imagined by the earliest commentators.
