Abstract

This chapter discusses the defeat mechanisms which are based on the high strength of the armor material. The armor designer is looking for low-density materials in order to reduce the armor’s weight, and such materials are described here. Particularly, ceramic plates and high-strength reinforced polymers are in common use in modern armor designs. The interaction between various threats and these designs is explored through experimental data, numerical simulations and analytical models.
