Transition from Adolescence to Adulthood in Those Without a Comorbid Intellectual Disability

Interprofessional Care Coordination for Pediatric Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract

Transitioning from adolescence to adulthood is a difficult journey for all adolescents, and it can be especially challenging for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder without a comorbid intellectual disability. Navigating the features associated with mastering daily living skills, understanding puberty and sexuality, transitioning from pediatric health care to adult health care, seeking out postsecondary education and vocational opportunities, and dealing with mental health issues can be challenging. It is important for parents, professionals, and school personnel to have an extensive understanding of the issues that may affect these adolescents in order to help them access resources and facilitate a successful adult outcome. This chapter highlights the challenges faced by adolescents in these areas, presents a case study, and provides resources and strategies that may aid adolescents in achieving independence and autonomy.
