Abstract

China is often regarded as an arena that deploys “borrowed innovation.” This chapter attempts to explain the challenges it faces and its responses to existential factors as it attempts to meet its aspirations. What we find are some ruthless practices as well as some explanations as to why its image is out of step with its achievements as a source of innovation.
