Abstract
In this chapter an overview on energy regulation is provided, covering both technical and economic criteria. Prior to addressing power and gas idiosyncrasies, a common background of regulation theory is introduced. This regulatory framework envisages not only the sector organization and value chain, but also a recipe for liberalization of energy services. Afterwards, this chapter brings a description of technical and economic aspects of power generation, energy transmission and distribution, and LNG business. As detailed within the chapter, in power generation and LNG regasification businesses one finds a competitive environment, while in transmission and distribution grids monopoly regulation prevails. Finally, this chapter draws an overview on future trends of energy regulation.
