Abstract
This chapter focuses on the translation of prosody in dubbed texts and the difficulties involved in rendering specific prosodic features from one language into another. It evaluates and illustrates by means of examples the impact that the source text prosody can have on the translation process as well as on the choices made by the translator and/or the dialogue writer. Attention is devoted to the divergences found between two languages such as English and Spanish, especially regarding intonation, and to the different ways in which prosodic content is exploited for communicative purposes. This chapter gives the reader the opportunity to come to grips with the ins and outs of translating prosody whilst dealing with language-specific variations and overcoming the limitations of the dubbing mode.
