Abstract

Procedural sedation is a multifaceted process which requires careful planning and consistent techniques to maximize efficiency and safety. Patient positioning is one aspect of the spectrum of procedural sedation care that may be overlooked or hurried. However, patient positioning should be as meticulously planned as any other aspect of the process. Positioning can have an impact upon the preexisting physiologic state of the patient, as well as potentially expose the patient to iatrogenic injury. Safe and effective patient positioning for procedural sedation considers the logistical needs of the necessary procedure while minimizing the effect(s) of the required position upon the patient.
