Abstract

Established applications for point-of-care testing (POCT) in radiology include pre-procedural pregnancy testing, assessment of renal function prior to the administration of contrast agents, anticoagulation management before and in some cases during invasive procedures, and capillary blood glucose testing as indicated. Sites performing POCT must comply with US federal regulations stipulated in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA), as well as additional requirements of accreditation agencies and some individual states. Although limited in number, outcome studies have demonstrated significant improvements in the timeliness and efficiency of radiology operations following implementation of POCT.
