Abstract
This chapter will provide a brief historical overview of the evolution of the CNS in the USA. Licensure, accreditation, certification, and educational preparation have advanced with the times, but barriers remain because the rules vary by each state in the USA. This chapter will also provide an overview of the elements that are paramount to the clinical nurse specialist role and how they intertwine throughout the day in radiology. Direct clinical practice, consultation, system leadership, collaboration, guidance and coaching, research, and ethical decision-making will be discussed.
