Abstract
Healthcare in the United States and around the world is going through a historic transformation. This change is disrupting business models and planning, not only in the way that healthcare is delivered but across a space that intersects with virtually every sector of the economy and has an impact on every individual. Many of the changes taking place may seem chaotic, but if one steps back and looks at several macro trends in healthcare, there is a signal that can be found in the noise to us understand where things are moving and how to create a strategy and plan for success.
In this chapter we will explore three broad areas where macro trends are driving change in our healthcare system: cost, consolidation, and new technology. The macro trends in each area will be explored in depth to see how each is impacting the healthcare space; how they relate to each other; how they combine in ways that will change how medicine is practiced and healthcare is delivered; and also how we can achieve the goal of a more accessible, equitable, and affordable healthcare system that is both high in quality and economically sustainable for the nation.
