Revision Surgery of the Foot and Ankle

Abstract

Arthrodesis of the 1st metatarsophalangeal joint is a commonly performed and widely successful procedure for the treatment of arthritis and deformity of the great toe. However, failure to achieve successful union and correct position of the arthrodesis can result in the need for revision fusion surgery. Additionally, when alternative surgical treatment options such as great toe arthroplasty or hemiarthroplasty have failed, conversion of these procedures to arthrodesis is often necessary. In each of these scenarios, the revision surgeon must be prepared to manage bone loss, deformity, and hardware complications in order to achieve a successful revision 1st MTPJ fusion.
