Abstract

About 40 (forty) dams on sandstones were built in Brazil. In the majority of the cases, the behavior of these dams was satisfactory, but some accidents have occurred that required interventions. In one case the loss of the dam occurred just after impounding. The most common problem in these foundations is the occurrence of geological discontinuities in the form of thin sand bedding layers intercalated in hard competent sandstone. In tunnels, the behavior of sandstones is very satisfactory. A correct geometry of the section, a partialized excavation method practice, and an appropriate support system, adequate to the nature and geomechanical properties of the rock mass and contour conditions, ensured the success of the construction. This chapter focuses on sandstone foundation examples and characteristics of dams, as well as erosion and flow control devices, and a railroad tunnel case.
