Abstract
The final chapter explores the research’s implications in terms of both further research and pedagogical practice. In the light of the study’s findings, the chapter argues for the importance of the longitudinal dimension when investigating the social significance of humorous language play. It also suggests a number of avenues for future research in the specific area of humorous language play in the second language classroom, including the opportunity to investigate learner-profile variables such as gender and learner motivation, play’s relationship to the acquisition process, failure and play, and the role of the teacher in play. The chapter finally encourages more research into the role of humorous language play in the world beyond the classroom where English is being used as a lingua franca daily across the world in a myriad of social, commercial, political and other settings.
