Notes

  1. 1.

Christophorus Buys Ballot (1817–1890) is best known for his law: Standing with your back to the wind, the air pressure on the left is lower than on the right, in the northern hemisphere, while it is the other way round in the southern hemisphere. In the Netherlands, he was also well known as founder of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI).

  2. 2.

Kema Laboratories perform accredited testing, inspections, and certification of components for transmission and distribution of electricity.

  3. 3.

The Munich Convention was signed on 30 September at the Munich Conference between France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy on the future of what was then Czechoslovakia. The treaty allowed the Czech Sudetenland, where a minority of Germans lived, to become German without involving Czechoslovakia in any way. This was a reward for the aggressive German politics. The British Prime Minister justified this capitulation under the heading of Peace for our time and stated that peace had been guaranteed for ten years until then. The Germans invaded Poland less than a year later.

  4. 4.

On 1 September 1939 Germany invaded Poland.

  5. 5.

This refers to the border control with Germany. For the French this was known as the ‘drôle de guerre’, for the Americans and British as the ‘phoney war’, and for the Germans as the ‘Sitzkrieg’.
