Abstract

The account of the quarrelsome and fiercely independent German Freikorps’ Baltic expedition demonstrates the significant difficulty of maintaining political-military coordination for expeditionary forces once deployed. Commanders in the field, reacting to the developments of a campaign, may interpret local circumstances differently than their domestic political leaders. This chapter explores the relationship between the political leaders of a nation and the command of the field army abroad, with particular focus on contested interpretations of political realities for an expeditionary force.
