Abstract

Motivational interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based and patient-centered approach to encouraging changes to habits, most typically targeting health-risk behaviors. MI eschews education, professional advice, and persuasion in favor of conversational strategies designed to elicit the patient’s own concerns, intentions, and reasons for change. This chapter provides a brief history of MI, style and spirit of MI, skills and strategies of MI, and the evidence-base for MI with pediatric medical conditions. Additionally, issues regarding training and integration of MI into treatment guidelines will be discussed.
