Abstract
This chapter focuses on the role of emotion regulation in understanding and treating pediatric medical conditions, including emotional expressivity and coping with stress and emotions. A brief overview of emotional developmental milestones is provided to guide cognitive-behavioral interventions for youth coping with a range of medical conditions. Evidence-based CBT techniques that can be used with a pediatric population are discussed. Given the prominent role that parents play in shaping children’s emotion regulation abilities over development, the chapter also addresses parent emotion socialization practices and how parenting interventions may be enhanced by attending to emotion regulation.
