Abstract
National image has recently become a prominent theme in translation studies. This chapter adopts a corpus-based discourse analysis approach to investigate the image of China in the Chinese translations of news reports on THAAD deployment in South Korea in the coverage of two South Korean news outlets. It is found that the two news outlets project China in different ways, yet the stances of those news outlets towards China remain consistent before and after the deployment of THAAD. It is argued that these different voices, no matter what attitudes they take towards China, aim to protect the national interests of South Korea and THAAD deployment concerns in light of the national interests of different sides in the complex geopolitical relations of the Asia-Pacific region.
