Abstract

Why treating tuberculosis and malaria within the same chapter? After all, they are quite different diseases, one of them being caused by a bacterium and the other one by a parasite (see Sect. 4.1). These pathogens do not attack the same organs. The clinical manifestations and diagnostic methods of the two diseases are not the same. Their dynamics of transmission are not at all alike, tuberculosis being transmitted directly from person to person whereas malaria passes through an intermediate host. As a consequence, preventive measures against tuberculosis and malaria also differ fundamentally. Therefore in Vietnam two separate networks of services were created, one devoted to tuberculosis and the other one to malaria, each headed by a central institute in Hanoi. At present control of tuberculosis is entrusted to the “National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology”and malaria is being handled by the “National Institute of Malaria, Parasitology and Entomology”.

Situation, dynamics of infection, risk factors, prevention , treatment and control.
