Abstract
Grain and nutritional qualities in rice are important attributes that rice breeders have dedicated to improve and tailor according to the preference of consumers. The recent advancement of DNA marker and sequencing technologies, mutation discovery and gene editing technologies has revolutionized the breeding approaches for developing rice with improved grain and nutritional qualities. Compared to conventional breeding approaches that involve many cycles of cross and self-pollinations and also careful phenotypic selections, the state-of-the-art technologies allow accurate modification of the gene that affects the trait of interest. With the current technologies, rice breeders could develop varieties integrated with desired traits in an expedited manner. To date, successful cases of developing rice with improved grain and nutritional qualities by utilizing the current technologies have been reported. Therefore, it is anticipated that utilizing the current technologies could develop rice with improved grain and nutritional qualities that not only caters consumers’ preference, but also nourish the people where malnutrition is prevalent.
