Anesthetic Management for the Pediatric Airway

Abstract

This chapter focuses on anesthetic considerations specific to pediatric maxillofacial and laryngotracheal trauma. A thorough understanding of affected anatomy and the goals and challenges of surgical repair are reviewed and serve as framework for discussion. Additionally, unique airway challenges encountered during operative procedures for head and neck trauma in children are highlighted. Anticipating potential difficulties that may arise during induction, maintenance, and emergence from anesthesia is critical to the safe management of pediatric maxillofacial trauma patients. The authors contribute complimentary perspectives from their respective fields of pediatric anesthesiology and pediatric otolaryngology to outline a collaborative approach to the delivery of perioperative care for these complicated patients.
