Abstract

The fastest growing age group of the US population is 85 years and older. The demographic shift toward an older population impacts the specialty of ophthalmology, as many common eye disorders occur with increasing frequency and severity with older age. The four most common age-related eye diseases are age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and primary open-angle glaucoma. Early recognition and treatment can help prevent vision loss in many of these patients.
