Abstract

This concluding chapter promotes the central belief that all development occurs within the context of relationship and that it is a healthy and reliable relationship that promotes and protects growth and change (National Scientific Council on the Developing Child, 2004). In exploring the importance of relationship to an infant or young child’s healthy development, the authors consider promotion, prevention, intervention, and treatment practices, across multiple disciplines and in many settings; policies that are in place to assure that practices are informed by infant mental health principles; what the role of reflective supervision and consultation is within these practices; and, finally, in regard to research and evaluation, what we envision needs to be more carefully evaluated to assure continued quality and growth in the field, as well as promising new directions.
