Abstract

This case discusses Allison, a 17-year-old female with a history of a past sexual assault who is experiencing severe depressive symptoms in the context of opioid use. Clinicians are advised to carefully screen adolescents with a history of trauma for any substance use and vice versa. The treatment of underlying psychiatric illness in addition to any substance use disorder (dual diagnosis) has also been found to be superior to treating only substance use disorders. The American Society of Addiction Medicine Patient Placement Criteria is used to assess appropriate placement and navigate different levels of care for Allison.
