Résumé
Les accidents vasculaires cérébraux (AVC) font partie des grandes priorités de santé publique. Les données épidémiologiques obtenues aux États-Unis et en Europe ont fait prendre conscience de l’ampleur de ce problème médical et du coût socio-économique élevé. On estime qu’il y a chaque année 130 000 à 150 000 cas d’accidents vasculaires cérébraux en France, davantage que d’infarctus du myocarde. Ils sont la première cause de handicap non traumatique chez l’adulte, la deuxième cause de démence après la maladie d’Alzheimer et la troisième cause de mortalité en France.
