Abstract

There are many sports where the hand is in direct contact with the ball without the intermediary of a racket or a bat. In order to satisfy both the popularity of the sport as well as the diversity of injuries that can occur, this research will particularly look at five ball sports in their most practised alternatives: basketball, football, handball, rugby and volleyball. In this regard, we decided to look at volleyball over beach volley, and rugby was preferred to rugby league football. Notwithstanding the difference of rules and environments among these variants, the relationship between the ball and the hand was similar. Several other ball sports were not considered; for example, water polo is rather a water sport, thus masking the hand and its link to the ball. American football, similar to rugby league football, has long been practised only in the USA and to a smaller extent in Japan since the 1950s. Its characteristics have not been specifically addressed in this book, particularly given its very recent introduction in Europe.
