Abstract

Nonpharmacologic interventions that are used in combination with antipsychotic medications include somatic therapies such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), and acupuncture. Adjunctive ECT has been tested in randomized controlled trials and its use with clozapine is encouraging. However, the bulk of supporting evidence for ECT in treatment-resistant schizophrenia is found in uncontrolled studies.
