Abstract

The precise etiology of de novo MDS is unknown. The disease has been associated with exposure to environmental toxins, such as benzene, and therapeutic radiation, with some evidence, albeit limited, supporting genetic predisposition in younger individuals. Secondary disease is specifically associated with cytoxic chemotherapy. The principal contributing factor may also be associated with intrinsic aging processes [6].
