Abstract
Carotid angioplasty and stenting (CAS) is increasingly used in the treatment of symptomatic severely stenotic carotid disease. Since the introduction of CAS, many technical and pharmacological advances have been made to optimize the outcome of the intervention. These factors have largely addressed the risk of embolic stroke and include patient selection, material choices, and ultimately, the skill of the operator. In addition, to further improve outcomes of CAS, there should be recognition of the nonembolic causes of stroke. This chapter focuses upon what can be done to optimize the outcome for the patient treated by CAS.
