Abstract
IEC 61850 is an approved international standard for communications in substations that is creating opportunities for a revolution in electric power-systems monitoring, control and protection. It represents the next step in the integration of multifunctional intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) based on the development and implementation of standardised abstract object models and advanced distributed applications.
