The NTFS (New Technology File System) file system has been used by Microsoft since the mid-1990s.It was rarely seen by forensic practitioners until the distribution of Windows 2000. With the introduction of Windows XP, particularly as a preinstalled operating system on new machines for use in the home, it is now encountered more often than the old FAT (File Allocation Table) based systems.
