Abstract

Emerging antibiotic resistance, global travel, and the absence of new antimicrobial agents make the treatment of male genital infections a dynamic and challenging clinical problem. This chapter reviews the common pathogenic organisms, high-risk patient populations, presenting clinical symptoms and signs of acute bacterial infections of the prostate, urethra, and male reproductive organs. Diagnostic testing strategies, including sophisticated molecular and radiologic tests, are provided for rapid identification and treatment of acute prostatitis, urethritis, and epididymo-orchitis. Management options are reviewed for each, including up to date CDC recommendations for antimicrobial options for sexually transmitted infections and treatment of partners.
