Over the past two decades, there has been much discussion in the medical literature about physician and scientist distress and little discussion about well-ness. Only recently have academic health centers implemented dedicated office of Faculty Affairs to provide support to faculty. There are commonalities to some of the challenges faculty encounter in different phases of an academic career. In this report, we will describe a Life Cycle model for career management that may provide a framework to identify, understand, anticipate, and respond to the changing needs of faculty throughout their careers. The goal of this Career Management Life Cycle is to enable institutions to help each professional achieve and sustain professional vitality throughout their careers. The model may also help institutions collaboratively learn to effectively and efficiently use institutional resources to promote faculty well-being and assist faculty in health and illness.
