Abstract
Using five clinical cases, this chapter discusses particular clinical dilemmas faced when working with Asian American immigrants. Topics discussed through the five cases include the following: (1) Intra- and Intergenerational acculturative familial conflicts; (2) Acculturation factors relevant to the onset of panic disorder; (3) Somatization, stigma, acculturative differences between patient and clinician; (4) Alcoholism, domestic violence, and intragenerational conflict; and (5) Acculturation considerations in the recognition and treatment of serious psychiatric illness. In addition, the authors address specific clinical challenges and recommendations based on gender and age.
