Abstract

The Integrative Medicine Program at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center focuses on treating cancer in the whole person. The program has three areas of emphasis: clinical delivery, education, and research. Clinically, we provide the highest quality integrative medicine therapies to patients and their families by using a patient-centered approach. The therapies are provided in concert with mainstream care to manage symptoms, relieve stress, enhance quality of life, and guide patients in their use of complementary medicine. Our educational focus is on providing reliable information on integrative medicine treatment options to patients, families, and medical staff of M. D. Anderson. This is done through our Web site (http://www.mdanderson.org/cimer), a lecture series, development of CD ROMs, and educating the next generation of medical professionals. Our research is advancing knowledge on the outcome and effectiveness of these therapies through peer-reviewed, mixed-methodology research. We are examining treatments to reduce the negative effects of cancer diagnosis and treatment and improving treatment outcomes and quality of life. Starting an integrative medicine program within a conventional medical setting takes careful planning. This chapter presents details on the clinical and educational aspects of M. D. Anderson’s program with an emphasis on how we started each, advice to those wanting to start a similar program, and important processes that are in place to ensure continued success. Collaboration remains the key to the evolving clinical, educational, and research efforts of the Integrative Medicine Program.
