Diffuse Malignant Mesothelioma

Abstract

Diffuse malignant mesothelioma’s (DMM) rarity, histologic diversity, and significant medical–legal implications all are confounding factors for accurate diagnosis. However, because DMM has a dismal prognosis and very limited treatment options, accurate diagnosis is paramount. Adequate biopsy tissue is a prerequisite to accurate diagnosis. In order to avoid the numerous potential diagnostic pitfalls attendant with its diagnosis, cases of suspected DMM should frequently be clinical and radiologic findings. Pathologists must maintain the highest level of professionalism and diagnostic accuracy when considering DMM diagnosis, and judicious consultation with a pulmonary pathologist with expertise in DMM diagnosis is suggested.
