Abstract

The combination of dietary modification, increased physical activity, and behavioral therapy is the most effective nonsurgical obesity treatment available. The US Preventative Services Task Force is recommending that clinicians refer obese individuals to “intensive, multicomponent behavioral interventions” and is consequently a mandate under the Affordable Care Act. Additionally, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently added a provision calling for “intensive behavioral counseling” to obese seniors. As a result of these national changes, health-care providers familiarizing themselves with the fundamentals of behavioral therapy is apropos and will be outlined as such in this chapter.
