Abstract
Every aspect of the surgical procedure to implant a spinal cord stimulation system demands respect. This globally encompasses: good surgical technique and knot tying, but can be broken down into its components: placement of the leads and anchoring, creation of the pocket for the internal programmable generator (IPG) and tunneling from the paraspinal incision to the pocket location. Often overlooked, the process of tunneling the lead or lead connectors from their neurostimulation target to the IPG location is critical for the device to be functional and allow communication between the electrode contacts and the desired neurological tissue. This chapter focuses on the procedure of tunneling for spinal cord stimulation.
