Abstract

This chapter provides a concise review of the principles of ultrasound generation, propagation through tissue and image formation and emphasizes the clinical relevance of the basic physics upon which this imaging modality is based. A practical understanding of the topic is emphasized over discussion of theoretical issues. The most common ways of modulating the ultrasound beam to optimize image quality are presented, together with a description and illustrations of the common artifacts that are encountered in clinical practice.
