Bladder Dysfunction in the Adult

Abstract

Urodynamics conventionally refers to cystometry, in which abdominal and bladder pressure are synchronously measured, allowing concurrent calculation of the detrusor pressure. Pressure is measured during bladder filling and voiding to identify any key problems during urine storage or bladder emptying. Invasive testing is only undertaken in people who have had conservative management and are likely to proceed subsequently to surgical intervention. Urodynamic tests must be undertaken according to International Continence Society standards. Crucially, the symptoms should be reproduced, and if they are not, the report should state this clearly. Modifications of the test allow synchronous imaging (videourodynamics), ambulatory testing and additional tests of urethral function.
