Abstract

Recent research has demonstrated the substantial prevalence of adolescent dating violence and the importance for public health because of the negative consequences for adolescent health and well-being. This chapter reviews the prevalence for dating violence using nationally representative studies, and the individual, family, and social factors predicting adolescent dating violence perpetration and victimization. Individual-level factors associated with dating violence include antisocial and aggressive behaviors, substance use, sexual behaviors, internalizing symptoms, and acceptance of dating violence norms. Several domains of the family context have been linked to adolescent dating violence. These include child maltreatment and harsh parenting, witnessing interparental violence, and attachment and supervision. The influence of peers, aspects of the school and neighborhood context, and media influences on adolescent dating violence are growing areas of research. Finally, this chapter review evidence-based treatment and prevention interventions for dating violence, with a focus on school-based programs for the primary prevention of dating violence.
