Abstract
Rigid oesophagoscopy is a useful and safe procedure in the evaluation of oesophageal disorders. In recent years flexible fibreoptic oesophagoscopy has enjoyed widespread use, mainly because general anaesthesia is not required, the stomach and duodenum can be examined, and the risk of perforation is lower. Nevertheless, the specific situations outlined below show that a need for rigid oesophagoscopy remains, and the technique should remain part of the armamentarium of all oesophageal surgeons.
