Bonding Connections and Interrelationships

Inorganometallic Chemistry

Part of the book series: Modern Inorganic Chemistry ((MICE))

Abstract

The historical development of the theoretical ideas which have brought the areas of transition metal and main group chemistry closer together have been described in some detail elsewhere(1) and will not be recounted here. The major developments and key references are, however, listed in chronological order in Table 1.(2–4) In the 1950s the contributions of Longuet-Higgins proved decisive, since he provided not only the three-center two-electron bonding concept for B2H6, which was elegantly generalized in Lipscomb’s styx formalism, but also pioneered the use of molecular orbital theory to describe the skeletal bonding in deltahedral boranes. This approach led, for example, to the successful prediction of the closed-shell requirements for the icosahedral B12H12 2− ion, several years before it was isolated.
