Abstract

In the previous chapter, compounds in which main group fragments functioned as ligands toward low-oxidation-state transition metal atoms were discussed. In contrast to, but also to compliment the former, the present chapter focuses on those compounds which classify as “clusters.” In keeping with Chapter 2, the word “cluster” is used here to refer to a compound with a core formulation of M n E m (M = low-oxidation-state transition metal, E = main group element) in which n ≥ 3 and m ≥ 1. In the light of this definition, the majority of clusters described within this chapter may be classified as being metal-rich.
